QCC Wyverns Reinvigorate - Brent Johnson

Reinvigoration is defined as “to give new or renewed strength or energy to (something or someone)”. Reinvigoration could be needed by a student after a rough exam performance, by an athlete recovering from an injury, or by humankind after a pandemic. This blog’s purpose is to inform about and reinvigorate Quinsigamond Community College’s Athletics as Q.C.C. transitions past the delays and problems caused by the COVID-19 Pandemic.

This August, Q.C.C. plans to have men’s and women’s soccer practice begin in preparation for the following Fall season. Athletic Director Lisa Gurnick and Assistant Athletic Director Josh Cole (who coaches the women’s soccer team) were also willing to share that they “are hopeful to offer more of our sports but we are waiting until June to see how things look. Again, we may have to look month to month after that. As we have learned during this pandemic, things can change daily” (the two athletic directors collaborated in providing very helpful information for this blog).

“There will be training for all involved. Proper PPE (personal protective equipment), new and additional paperwork surrounding the pandemic (COVID screening questionnaires, return to play paperwork, and disinfecting policies. There will be limitations to the numbers of students and coaches during practices and any type of training in the fitness center” The pair of Athletic Directors concluded this response to how the Athletics department and staff will adapt upon return by also sharing that “much of this is still in the works”.

Athletic Directors Gurnick and Cole were incredibly helpful and willing to participate in an interview for this blog, and continually showed great enthusiasm and a desire to reinvigorate Q.C.C. Athletics during our communications. Their passion was reflected greatest in responding to my question about the participation numbers of student athletes as athletics return:

“The Quinsigamond Community College students want to play. This is really tough to predict but we think that our students want to play, and will do what they need to so they can play safely… Massachusetts Community College Presidents are working collaboratively on athletics, as well as many other things. Each college will of course have their own rules they want followed… we are going to try to have the same protocols and offer the same sports, if possible. Nothing is in stone yet, only time will tell.”
